Musical therapy for autism is a new treatment possibility for autistic patients, that should not be overlooked when considering available options. Autistic children who receive musical therapy often show great improvement in temperament and learning skills. Music connects to the non-verbal part of our brains, making it a perfect therapy for disorders in which the patient has trouble communicating, such as autism. Great advances are made into improving brain functions and musical therapy is one of them. Research this innovative treatment method if you are looking for help with autism and haven't had much luck in the past.

One way that musical therapy helps the autistic child, as well as older autistic patients, is by helping with the development of speech skills. Music is a way to connect the verbal and non-verbal functions in the brain. Autistic individuals regularly have various forms of speech problems. Some can only hum, grunt or growl, or make other non-word noises, while others babble nonsensical phrases or cries. Still others gain the capability to put together phrases and sentences to communicate with the world, although these usually lack emotion. Autistic people are known for monotone voices. However, no matter how skilled the individual is with speech, he or she can participate in musical therapy by clapping rhythms, humming along, or doing simple echoing songs.

By using musical therapy for autism along with other therapies you may see great improvments in the autistic child. Trained professionals can use music to teach children and others how to communicate in nonverbal ways, making it easier for patients to learn. Research the musical therapy option to provide you or your child with another choice when treating autism.

Autistic Forms of Teaching and Tolerance

Understanding how autistic children learn is key to teaching them with the same intensity as you teach other children. This may seem like a straightforward idea, but autistic children learn so differently that understanding autism itself is a must when you teach autistic children.

By becoming educated in the disorder, teachers can effectively learn to deal with autistic children and adults both in and out of the classroom, creating a more understanding world for everyone
Autistic children are often visual thinkers. Thus teaching by speaking will not be entirely effective. Teachers should combine pictures with words for the autistic child to fully comprehend the lesson. For instance, if you are teaching about the animals of the world, you should have a flash card with the word "mouse," say the word aloud slowly and clearly, and show the child a picture of a mouse. Perhaps even bring a live mouse in for show and tell. Nouns may be easier to teach autistic children since verbs require action and can be more difficult in illustrating.

If you are teaching autistic children words such as "sit" or "stand," you should complete these actions when you teach the word. Also, because of the tendency to be visual, autistic children are often unable to follow long sentences. They cannot decipher the sequence and become confused. Thus, writing instructions can be very helpful when proctoring tests or quizzes.

As visual thinkers, autistic children can often fixate on a particular object or picture. If this is the case, try incorporating that object or picture into lesson plans. If the child likes planes, try using planes for visuals wherever you can in the lesson. For example, when teaching math, create word problems about planes to interest the child. Autistic children also tend to be artistic or musical, producing highly original drawings and showing above average abilities with instruments or voice. Set aside time in the day for the arts and encourage activities that the children enjoy.

Autistic children may also have trouble writing because of the control over their hands and movement. This is frustrating for both the child and the teacher. To reduce frustration, allow the child to use a computer. If you can do this, make sure that the keyboard and monitor are close together as the child may have difficulty remembering what he or she has typed recently.
By being open to teaching an autistic child to the best of your ability, you are not only giving him or her the best opportunities in life, but you are also being a good role model to the other children in the class. Do not allow an autistic child to ruin the learning experience for others, but rather incorporate his or her oddities into your lessons as much as possible. Creating a more prejudice-free classroom is the best gift you can give this child.

Having Self-control with Autism

Self-discipline is a skill that most autistic children have trouble acquiring. This includes not only inappropriate outbursts, but also habits that can be potentially dangerous, such as being aggressive towards others or causing harm to themselves, such as banging their heads off walls. To prevent these and other behaviors, one technique parents and educators can use to control autistic tendencies is self-management. Giving the child power over him- or herself is often the key to keeping control over violent situations and may be a positive step towards learning other behaviors as well.

Self-management works because the child is no longer fully controlled by others. By teaching self-management during specific times of day, such as while the child is at school or therapy, the child will be more likely to continue to practicing self-control during all times of the day. The key is to implement a program in which he or she monitors his or her own behavior and activities. Begin with short amounts of time, and continue to monitor the child from a more passive standpoint. Every ten to fifteen minutes remind the child that he or she is in control and needs to monitor and be aware of good and bad behavior.

This monitoring is a form of self-evaluation. When a child is in control, he or she may think more closely about behavior in the past and present. Set clear goals with the child-for example, an afternoon with no aggression towards others or a day at school with no self-injury. Every fifteen minutes ask the child how he or she is doing. Is the goal being met? If the answer is no, perhaps the child is not ready for self-management, or perhaps the goals are too unattainable. You want to make sure that the goals are easy to reach at first, and then move the child towards more difficult goals in the future. When a child is successful at self-monitoring, he or she will have a more positive attitude towards the experience.

Of course, an important part of self-management is a rewards system. Have the child come up with his or her own reward, depending on interest. Reinforcement will make these good behavior goals more clearly marked in the child's mind, and by choosing and rewarding him- or herself, the child will feel completely in control of the self-management system. Choose simple rewards to start, such as smiley faces for every goal met and sad faces for every goal not met, and work up to a larger goal, such as a special activity or new toy when a certain amount of smiley faces has been attained.

These types of programs do not develop overnight, so it is important that you and the child have enough time to devote to a self-management experience. By reinforcing good behavior with rewards, as determined by the child instead of by an adult, he or she will be more likely to carry this on even when not participating in the program. If your autistic child is mature enough, this could be a good treatment program to try.

Visual Perception Treatment for Autistic Children

Autism effects every child differently, so it is difficult to find the exact treatments your child needs to cope with his or her symptoms. One thing that effects some autistic children (though, not all) is problems with visual perception. By using some standardized methods to help improve visual perception, you can give your child the ability to see the world more clearly, making learning and comprehension easier and possibly curbing some behavior problems as well.

Autistic children mainly have problems with sensory overload and distortion. These are some of the same problems many people not suffering from the disorder develop, and so many treatment options have become available. Individuals with autism often find, however, that the sensory overload of the world due to light, colors, contrast, shapes, and patterns, is too much to handle, causing them to act out or shut down in general. This is sometimes a genetic condition that is simply enhanced by the autism, so if the child's parents have trouble with reading or have been otherwise treated for visual perceptive problems, there is a good chance that the child needs help as well.

The Irene Method is one effective way to treat visual perception disorders. This method uses color to create a more harmonized world. You may have heard of these methods if anyone has ever suggested using a color filter over the page when reading to be able to read better and more quickly. This method is proven to work, and if your autistic child is at the maturity level of reading, you may want to try these color filters to see if there is a difference in speed and comprehension. However, it is more likely that your autistic child will benefit from color filters during the entire day, not just when reading. Special glasses have been made using colored lenses to conquer this problem. Not every child responds the same way to every color, so it is a process of trial and error to find out which color is the one blocking the harmful light. You can also choose to use colored light bulbs in your home to help autistic individuals with their visual perception problems.

This method mainly helps children in 4 areas: depth perception, social interaction, learning, and physical well being. The colors help the child determine how far he or she is from an object, and the world becomes more three-dimensional, helping depth perception. Social interaction also improves because the child feels as though he or she is in a calmer world and can more clearly see and interpret facial expressions. The colors make it possible to learn, especially when reading, and overall, the child will feel better, because it helps reduce headaches and dizziness. By testing this technique and others to help visual perception problems, you can help your child better cope with the world and his or her autism.

Vaksin penyebab Autis VERY TOP URGENT !!!!!

Thursday, July 3, 2008 9:26 AM Vajradenta

Show them that WE care!"

Lebih Mengenal Autisme

DEFINISI

  1. Infeksi virus (rubella kongenital atau cytomegalic inclusion disease)
  2. Fenilketonuria (suatu kekurangan enzim yang sifatnya diturunkan)
  3. Sindroma-X yang rapuh (kelainan kromosom)

GEJALA

Penderita autisme klasik memiliki tiga gejala, yaitu:
gangguan interaksi sosial

ADHD - ADHD Symptoms & ADHD Cures

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 12:06 PM Vajradenta

Hallowell and Ratey, authors of Driven to Distraction, list 20 symptoms that are often apparent in a person with ADHD:
  1. Disorganized
  2. A sense of underachievement, of not meeting one's goals (regardless of how much one has accomplished)
  3. Chronic procrastination or trouble getting started
  4. Many projects going simultaneously; trouble with follow-through
  5. Tendency to say what comes to mind without necessarily considering the timing or appropriateness of the remark
  6. An ongoing search for high stimulation
  7. A tendency to be easily bored
  8. Easy distractibility, trouble focusing attention, tendency to tune out or drift away in the middle of a page or a conversation, often coupled with an ability to focus at times
  9. Often creative, intuitive, highly intelligent
  10. Trouble going through established channels, following proper procedure
  11. Impatient; low tolerance for frustration
  12. Impulsive, either verbally or in action, as in impulsive spending, changing plans, enacting new schemes or career plans
  13. Tendency to worry needlessly, endlessly; tendency to scan the horizon looking for something to worry about alternating with inattention to or disregard for actual dangers
  14. Sense of impending doom, insecurity, alternating with high risk-taking
  15. Depression, especially when disengaged from a project
  16. Restlessness
  17. Tendency toward active behavior
  18. Chronic problems with self-esteem
  19. Inaccurate self-observation
  20. Family history of manic-depressive illness, depression, substance abuse or other disorders of impulse control or mood

As far as "cures" go for ADHD, they have many drugs out there that they say "help ADHD". However, USA Today reported that "An FDA report released prior to the meeting said that 25 children and adults had died suddenly rom 1999 to 2003 after taking ADHD drugs." Now that's pretty scary.

Be careful about the drugs that are out there. The drug companies are a huge business and like they say, why would they cure the problem because if they did, they wouldn't have you coming back for more.

There are alternative treatments out there. I would definitely try those first before putting children on drugs.

You can view an alternative treatment that has testimonials that show it works at http://www.provennaturalcures.com/naturalremediesforadhdchildren.html

Medications For Autism

There are many medications for autism currently in use. Doctors attempt to make their selections from among the current medications for treating autism based on the symptoms the autistic person is showing and past successes and failures treating that particular person with other medications for treating autism.

Caretakers of someone who has been diagnosed with autism will need to be particularly observant when medications for autism are changed. In some cases adverse reactions or undesired outcomes may result from the use of current medications for treating autism. This is why the autistic patient will generally be started on a very low dose of a medication and then slowly moved up until the smallest effective dose is found or the medication is ruled out as a positive treatment for that particular patient.

It should be emphasized that there are no medications for curing autism, only medications for treating autism. For this reason, medications for autism are often combined with various other types of therapy to receive the best overall results. The goal is to get enough benefits from the medications for treating autism to help the patient function closer to normal in society and be able to learn and grow as a person towards more independent, broad mental capacities.

Specific Medications For Autism:

Anti-Anxiety
Autistic people often suffer a lot of anxiety on a daily basis. They do not have the same mental controls over their responses to these anxieties that an ordinary person typically has. As a result they may act out in unpredictable ways and suffer a lot of mental anguish they cannot understand. Anti-anxiety medications can help with treating autism's anxiety, but the patient should be monitored for any signs of extreme actions that they might not normally take when beginning anti-anxiety medications for autism.

Anti-Psychotic
Those with autism may act out their thoughts and feelings in ways that we find strange and unpredictable. In some cases they may even become a physical danger to themselves and others. Anti-psychotics can be used to help the autistic patient respond more calmly and predictably to their thoughts and feelings. This should help the autistic person sleep better and act with less aggression.

Anti-Convulsant
Anti-Convulsant medications are used for treating autism when the autism is accompanied by seizures.

Sedative
Occasionally, autistic patients will be treated with sedatives for insomnia for short periods of time. Other methods usually need to be implemented to help the autistic person relax and go to sleep over the long term because sedatives are only a short-term sleep solution.

Stimulant
Stimulants are often prescribed to help those with autism to focus their minds. Autistic people tend to be easily distracted. This is particularly important for autistic school children who already have a lot to overcome in school.

Addiction Recovery 2.0

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, almost 2 million people this year will find themselves entering some kind of rehabilitation for abuse of various drugs or alcohol. In the past 70 years or so, these alcoholics and addicts would have left various rehabilitation institutions to then begin a lifetime of meetings in church basements with fellow addicts or alcoholics, there to find the support and encouragement to continue their life clean and sober.

Well, now, in spite of fears about Internet addiction, major recovery organizations have been using the Internet to help and support individuals recovering from their affliction. An increasing number of support groups are springing up all over web with one goal: to provide online, 24/7 support for people recovering from some form of substance abuse.

Typically, the online venues focus on the 12-step recovery approach - the recovery program outlined by Bill Wilson and Bob Smith, the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's a popular program and, it seems, there is now a 12-step program tied to every possible substance abuse or behavior even including Nicotine Anonymous! Instead of holding daily or weekly meetings however, more and more of these 12-step groups are turning their attention to providing online chat, web forum, and list server-based recovery groups. The Internet is being used to connect similarly afflicted individuals and groups from all over the world. Over the world wide web, recovery meetings are no longer of an hour's duration in a church basement, groups now meet for 24 hours a day with members checking in and out at will or as needed.

Alcoholics Anonymousthe oldest of the recovery groups, now offers meetings using email list servers, VoIP, and chat. AA provides online meetings in 33 different countries and hosts them in more than 10 different languages!

Narcotics Anonymoushas more than 20 internationally accessible email meetings and Cocaine Anonymous offers 6 internationally accessible email meetings.

Of course, for every benefit of online meetings, there are also some risks. The use of chat protocols, for example, opens up a portal to the user's PC that may expose them to risk of being "hacked." Email-based list servers also pose the problem of how to remain "anonymous" when the entire virtual room can see your email address.

Too, there are also hazards from various unscrupulous recovery organizations that prey on individuals in early recovery or their families. Over the Internet, they seem like legitimate organizations, but they are not always. As with most Internet-based activities, various fraud, email harvesting, and identity theft schemes abound. But even in those cases, Internet-based solutions emerge.

One organization, All Addictions Anonymous Watch, for example, focuses on keeping a watchful eye on some of the less scrupulous efforts to exploit recovering individuals.

Exploiting Internet technology may prove to be a great boon to people trying to shake addictions. It has truly become Addiction Recovery 2.0. Nonetheless, family members and recovering individuals would be wise to keep stick to the major and best known recovery organizations (e.g AA, NA, CA) and, if they choose to participate online, they should get a Yahoo!, Gmail, or Hotmail mailbox using a pseudonym to keep themselves truly "anonymous".

Preventing Alzheimer's Disease - Two Simple Steps

Alzheimer's Disease effects about 10 percent of people over age 65 and nearly 50 percent of all people over age 85. It is a progressive disease that results in the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and shrinking of the brain matter.

The United States accounts for 25 percent of the cases, yet we only represent about 4.5 percent of the world's population. Within the U.S., 75 percent of the cases occur in Caucasian people. The first case of AD was documented in 1906.

The medical documentation indicates that the disease is still a mystery. Yet there have been several factors that show correlation with the disease that should not be overlooked.

One factor that seems to be most universally accepted in a higher level of aluminum found in people with AD. The main sources of aluminum can be found in drinking water, foods, medications, antacids, antiperspirants, aluminum cookware, aluminum foil, and aluminum cans.

You can check with your municipal water office to obtain a report analyzing the contents of your water. The World Health Organization has recommended the amount of aluminum present in drinking water to be below 200 micrograms per liter.

Replace your cookware with stainless steel or cast iron, Pyrex or glass.

Do not let foods, especially acidic foods, come in contact with aluminum foil. The food will leach the aluminum from the foil. Food and soda in aluminum cans will do the same thing.

Avoid antiperspirants containing aluminum. Read labels on medications, ask your pharmacist or doctor if they contain aluminum and if so, is there an alternative medication.

Avoid antacids. Focus on ways to prevent heartburn by drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the day. Take digestive enzymes with your meals, chew your food slowly and thoroughly, practice proper food combining (don't eat proteins and starches in the same meal).
Controlling the future intake of heavy metals is one preventive measure. Ridding your body of metals that are already in your body is recommended, too. You can do a heavy metal detoxification cleanse that will remove the metal toxicity from your body.

Another factor that may contribute to AD is a higher level of mercury caused by amalgam fillings in the teeth. Consider replacing them or when they do need to be replaced, consider an alternative material.

Vitamin deficiencies have also been implicated in the development of AD.

A vitamin B-12 deficiency can actually show similar symptoms as AD and may actually progress to AD eventually. It is estimated that 40 percent of elderly Americans suffers from a vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Other vitamin deficiencies that have been linked to AD are vitamins A, E, and beta-carotene.
Could the key to preventing or decreasing the chances of developing AD be as simple as removing heavy metals from our body and taking a good nutritional supplement? It certainly seems like an easy preventive measure to consider in order to avoid a disease that has such an enormous impact on our family both emotionally and financially.

Autism-Stimming AKA Self Stimulating Behaviour

For a child with Autism, Stimming is an abbreviated term for Self Stimulating behaviour. It is a necessary element for the Autistic child in that it seems to be a way for them to make sense of all that is going on around them. It can also be termed as Zoning Out.

Stimming can manifest in many ways. It can be displayed as flapping, an obsessiveness with a particular item or the way that it is moving or self injurious like biting of the hands or knuckles to name but a few.

No two children with Autism are the same so it is quite natural that there will be many forms of Self Stimulating behaviours.

For the Autistic child, this is a needed outlet and if the stimming takes a form that is not inappropriate, it should not be restricted. It seems to act as a self control method for them to calm themselves and even, in some ways, to digest information.

Stimming seems to manifest on a larger, more intense scale when the child with Autism is in a situation that they are not entirely comfortable with which could be as small as a person entering a room that they are not familiar with or an assembly hall which could be filled with many people and lots of noise.

For a child with Autism, stimming is a necessary outlet. It can be reduced somewhat by controlling the external environment e.g. dimming the lights or lowering noise levels. However, to attempt to completely eradicate it may not be the correct thing to do as it may be replaced by the Autististic child with another stim that may be less appropriate.

It may be far more beneficial to both the Autistic child and the caregiver to develop a means of encouraging the child to use their stims at home or in privacy thereby decreasing the risk of being socially ostracized by their peers if they were to use them in public.

Some children with Autism are not even aware of their flapping but if gently reminded, they will attempt to halt it themselves if they are in a place where it could be looked on as an anomaly.
With some Autistic children, their stimming can be used as a positive tool to encourage social interaction.

For example, if the child with Autism's particular stim is ripping paper then if you were to join in and rip paper too, after a while, you would notice that the Autistic child will look to see what you are doing. This is especially true when in the past, you have tried to discourage stimming.

Every look should be responded to with positive feedback e.g. "Great, you looked at me" or "Wow, what pretty blue eyes you have" or something similar. In time, this will open the door to more social interaction with the Autistic child sometimes handing you paper to rip or seeking you out so that you can participate in their stim.

Any time that the Autistic child spends interacting with you is less time they are spending in their own world which should be the ultimate goal. A paper ripping session today could turn into next weeks jigsaw puzzle with slow, positive guidance from you.

The three major areas that children with Autism have problems in are: Communication, Play and Social Interaction. If you can increase their socialization skills, then you can only be helping the other two areas to increase also.

Brain Age Mythology Compared to What Really Improves Cognitive Health

Many people have been asking us recently about whether we all have a "Brain Age" and how we can reduce our "brain ages". This concept is a myth, fueled by the (very fun) Nintendo game and a recent PBS campaign promoting a program produced by Posit Science.

The concept of having a "brain age" is, itself, profoundly unscientific, despite the radio ads for the PBS program titled Brain Fitness Program, where listeners of all ages get the impression (as many friends and colleagues have reported) that, should they buy the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program, they can expect their brains "rejuvenated" by 10 years. This, I hear often, must be true, coming from PBS.

Unfortunately, it isn't. And it isn't because the claim is founded on the same faulty premise of having a "brain age".

What is going on?

First, the good news. Today we know today that the brain retains lifelong plasticity (the ability to change itself through experience). Aging does not mean automatic decline.

Furthermore, we know that a variety of lifestyle factors, including physical and mental exercise, can influence how our mental abilities evolve as we age. We can delay or slow down age-related decline. Not only that, we can improve our abilities, and a number of computer-based programs have shown how they can help specific groups of people train and enhance specific cognitive skills.

Now, what is important to recognize is that there is not one overall "brain age". We can view our brain functions or cognitive abilities as a variety of skills, some more perception-related, some more memory-related, some more language-related, some more visual, some more abstract-thinking and planning oriented. All science-based brain fitness products in the market today target specific cognitive skills. The research that has been published shows how specific brain functions can be improved. But there is no general "brain age" that can be measured or trained in a meaningful way.

Let's analyze the PBS Posit Science-related message: you can rejuvenate your brain by 10 years. What would this mean, were it to be true? perhaps that ALL cognitive abilities would go back to where they were 10 years before. and that this would happen for individuals of all ages: in our 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and so on. It would also mean that, given that rejuvenated "brain age", our risk of developing Alzheimer's symptoms would be adjusted to reflect our "new" brain age. And that the evolution of our cognitive abilities over the rest of our lives would reflect our new-found "brain age".

Has this been shown?

Unfortunately, not. The "10 years" claim seems based on one published study, and several unpublished ones, where individuals with an average age of around 70 years take on a very intense auditory processing training program that enables them to improve related auditory cognitive skills by a significant percentage. Whereby, on average, and on those specific skills, they reach a level comparable to people 60 years old.

But this doesn't say anything about other cognitive skills. Or Alzheimer's related risks. Or the cognitive trajectories that will follow.

Just think about this: if, by attending an intensive tennis camp, you were able to serve at a level comparable to people 10 years younger than your age...would you say that your body is now 10 years younger? Probably not. You'd say that now you play tennis better. Which is a significant benefit in itself if that's what you are after.

Recent studies have shown a tremendous variability in how well people age and how, to a large extent, our actions influence our rate of brain improvement and/or decline. The earlier we begin the better. And it is never too late.

What can we do to maintain our brain? Focus on four pillars of brain health: physical exercise, a balanced diet, stress management, and brain exercise. Stress management is important since stress has been shown to actually kill neurons and reduce the rate of creation of new ones. Brain exercises range from low-tech (i.e. meditation, mastering new complex skills, lifelong learning and engagement) to high-tech (i.e. using the growing number of brain fitness software programs).

In summary, the great news is that there are more tools available than ever before to assess and train a variety of cognitive skills, in what is still today a very small, but growing market. Nintendo, Posit Science, and others are offering valuable products and services.
The bad news (is this really news?) is that we shouldn't be expecting magic pills and that "brain age" is a fiction.

In case you wonder...I do have and enjoy my copy Nintendo Brain Age, and appreciate it as a stimulating game. I simply don't outsource my brain fitness to Dr. Kawashima...
